PTO stands for
Parent-Teacher Organization and Taylorville Primary has one of Alabama's
best! The PTO plays a vital role in providing volunteers and financial
resources for Taylorville Primary. Working together with the staff,
educators, and parents at Taylorville Primary we are able to provide
wonderful learning opportunities and experiences for our children. These
range from music and art programs instructed by highly trained
professionals, to making sure every classroom is equipped with a state
of the art computer system!
The State of Alabama,
along with local contributors, provide the money that goes toward the
"basics" such as teachers' salaries, classrooms, and textbooks. Anything
over and above the "basics" must be provided by other resources, thus
the PTO. The Taylorville Primary PTO has made many commitments this year
to our children, teachers, and staff. We want to provide the "extras"
that we feel are crucial to each child's education so they can receive
the best education possible. In a year of budget cuts and shortfalls the
PTO will go the distance to ensure that all children at Taylorville
Primary will continue to receive the best education possible.
What does the PTO do?
Every
year the PTO Board works with Dr. Lamon to determine what the school
will need for the coming school year. Our efforts are directed towards
paying the salaries of the Music and Art teachers as well as providing
supplies for these two programs. We also fund the Special Education
program and the teacher’s supplies. A state of the art writing program
was ordered for use in every grade, giving our children a head start on
the gift of writing, a gift many school children never fully achieve.
These projects in addition to technology, library assistance, visiting
programs, a stage for the cafeteria, school equipment and maintenance
and the Character First program create a budget for the Taylorville
Primary PTO of nearly $80,000.00! We are only able to provide this with
the support of every parent. Please support your PTO by becoming a
member, participating in the fundraisers and volunteering!
The PTO Board firmly
believes that all students, teachers, and parents deserve to know why we
have fundraisers and exactly where and how the money is used. Listed
below are some of the School Support Expenses which the PTO hopes to
provide through our fundraising projects each year.
Library Assistance
- The PTO assists with the purchase of new library books and accelerated
reader materials. The PTO also helps supplement the income of the
"library assistant". The library can be a very demanding place, and with
650+ students checking out books, returning books, taking tests, and
just asking for help from the librarian, she gets stretched pretty thin.
Technology - The
efforts of past PTO's has resulted in a computer being placed in every
classroom. These computers are a great investment in your child's
future. We continue to provide additional computers as needed for those
new classrooms that have begun this year due to the growth of our
school. If we want our children to be prepared for the 21st century,
they must be computer literate. The PTO also provides funds for the
Accelerate Reader Program "Disk and Books" which our children use daily.
Cultural Arts -
Research has shown that children greatly benefit from exposure to the
arts. The PTO stands behind this belief that our children's lives can be
greatly enriched and enhanced through this experience. Unfortunately,
the funds to provide this experience are not provided by the State
Department of Education. Therefore, it is up to the parents and the
community to provide the needed funds to pay the salaries and to
purchase the supplies of the Art and Music Teachers. Funds also
provide experiences such as the visiting performance arts companies.
Character First
Program - The PTO feels the "Character First" program plays an
integral part in shaping our children. The program, overseen by our
counselor, addresses a different "character" trait each month. The
counselor and teachers talk about these traits during the school day and
this is followed up with take home literature. The supplies for this
program are costly and the PTO has agreed to pay these costs to keep
this wonderful program in our school.
School Equipment
- The PTO would like to continue to assist our school with the purchase
and maintenance of equipment such as copiers, overhead projectors,
laminating machines, mowers, etc. We also assist with funding the
equipment maintenance for our computers and copiers and for additional
telephone lines used in our school office. This equipment is necessary
for a school of our size to function efficiently. The PTO is a big help
in insuring the school has the proper equipment. |
